What is the difference between GB and TB and so on?

Want to know how many GB in a TB? Or, without the abbreviations, how many gigabytes are in a terabyte? First, you need to understand what a byte is, then it's super simple to know the difference between MB to KB or MB to GB.

A byte (B) is the smallest unit of digital information. It’s a unit of digital information that most commonly consists of eight bits. A file is made up of so many bytes–the more bytes, the bigger the file.

A kilobyte (KB) is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. According to the meaning of the prefix kilo in the International System of Units (SI), which is 1,000, one kilobyte equals 1,000 bytes. Kilobytes are denoted by the globally accepted unit symbol, KB.

A megabyte (MB) is a multiple of the digital informational unit byte. The suggested unit symbol for it is MB. In the International System of Units (SI), the unit prefix mega is multiplied by 100,000 to determine the unit. As a result, one megabyte is equal to one million bytes of data.

A gigabyte (GB) is a multiple of the digital informational unit byte. A gigabyte is equal to one billion bytes. The gigabyte is denoted by the letters GB.

Digital data is measured in terabytes (TB), which are about 1 trillion bytes. A terabyte is exactly 1 trillion bytes when written in decimal notation (base 10). A terabyte, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, is equivalent to 240 bytes in binary notation.

A terabyte (TB) is then followed in the same pattern exponentially by a petabyte (PB), then exabyte (EB), then zetabyte (ZB), then yottabyte (YB), and then anything bigger than that is difficult to fathom.

Questions? We have answers.

Select the value you wish to convert and select the value you would like to convert it to (for example: KB to MB). Enter a value in the first section on the left, and your answer will appear in the second section on the right.

Simply input the byte value you want to convert into our Byte Converter and select the byte value you want to reformat in, the value will automatically be converted and displayed.

You may also use the conversion chart listed above if you want to manually do the calculation.

1024 GB equals 1 TB. So one TB of storage can hold 1024 GB of data.

TB and GB only differ in size. A terabyte is made up of more bytes, the smallest units of data, than a gigabyte. In general, a B is smaller than a KB, a MB is bigger than that, a GB is bigger still, and a TB is even bigger.

If you would like to see how they all stack up against each other or what’s MB meaning or what’s bigger than a terabyte, check out the conversion chart above on the page.

Though your 1 TB drive is listed as having 1 TB worth of storage, typically, you won’t be able to use the whole amount as part of the drive may be used for operational files.

2 terabytes (TB) equals 2,000 gigabytes (GB) or 2,000,000 megabytes (MB). With 2TB of data, you can store an average of 200,000 photos with today's smartphones, and roughly 500,000 documents can fit on a 2TB drive.

1 terabyte (TB) equals 1,000 gigabytes (GB) or 1,000,000 megabytes (MB). With 1TB of data, you can store an average of 100,000 photos with today's smartphones, and roughly 250,000 documents can fit on a 1TB drive.
